Fringe review: 'Matador' posted by emaupin on May 20, 2007 12:44:57 AM

Writer/actor Christian Kelty is often guilty of emotional overreach, but you'll never hear him apologize. That alone covers up a multitude of sins. So it is with Matador, a zen morality play about a legendary bullfighter, his bull, and the return to the dying town of their prime. Under the direction of Michael Marinaccio, the play's biggest strength is its ability to maintain the mood of a surreal fable. Liam Adams' flamenco-flavored score helps. Kelty's penchant for alliteration, not so much. But the cast is more than capable of making you forget the missteps. Timothy Williams handles the emotional load as the Matador with grace and intelligence, and Kelty makes a convincing and enigmatic bull - so much so that you wish the dynamic between the two was explored that much more. There's a lot of extraneous relationships hiding behind Matador's red cape, but a lot of welcome depth, too. -- Tod Caviness Remaining performances: 7:15 p.m. Sunday May 20, 9:50 p.m. Monday May 21, 7:40 p.m. Wednesday May 23, 11:50 p.m. Thursday May 24, 10:05 p.m. Friday May 25, 9 p.m. Saturday May 26.
